As a motorist for a decade and a half, I’ve had my fair share of traffic enforcer run-ins. All of them, I’m afraid are with the enforcer in the wrong. Whether they’re just plain ignorant of traffic rules or doing it for the bribes, I have just had it with their antics.
In light of the sacking of an MMDA traffic constable caught taking bribes from a bus conductor, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino is reported to have encouraged the public to catch other erring constables on video. Those with reports and complaints can upload the video to the MMDA website. It’s a bit comforting to have officials who encourage evidence gathering. I just hope mayors (who are responsible for traffic officers in their areas) encourage the same thing. These guys are known to be more notorious than their MMDA counterparts.
As with anything, technology is a double-edged sword. Privacy remains a concern. On the road, however, where there are too many hooligans and morons, the positives can outweigh the negatives. Just check out David Kilpatrick’s share on Facebook where he caught Pasig traffic enforcers flagging him down.
This is it. I’m investing in a dashcam.
